St. Lawrence County Public Transit (slcnypublictransit.com), operated by The Arc Jefferson - St. Lawrence, is holding a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the placement of a new, solar powered bus shelter at 6 Judson Street in Canton. The event will take place on Monday, May 1st at 5:30 p.m. This will be a rain or shine event.
The Transit routes that have stops at the new shelter include: 12, 22, 31, 61, 62, 63, 65, 66, 70A, 70B, 71, and 74. Riders will be able to access the shelter more easily on new sidewalks that were recently installed, as well. The shelter contains a bench that can accommodate at least four people, on-demand lighting, and has a USB charging port.
“Through our partnership with St. Lawrence County, we are happy to be adding another bus shelter to SLC Public Transit’s offerings," stated Lynn Pietroski, Chief Executive Officer of The Arc Jefferson – St. Lawrence. “Our riders know they can rely on Public Transit to provide excellent service and this new shelter will mitigate concerns about weather as they wait for transport.”
St. Lawrence County’s Public Transit System provides transportation throughout most towns in the County on Monday to Friday. Buses are wheelchair accessible, bicycle racks are available, and there is free Wi-Fi service on many routes. Passengers who are not within walking distance of a Transit stop may access Volunteer Transit Center’s First Mile Last Mile service to get a ride to their nearest bus stop. During the ceremony, Lynn Pietroski, Chief Executive Officer of The Arc Jefferson - St. Lawrence announced that SLC Public Transit saw a 43% increase in ridership on Public Transit from 2021 to 2022. The system provided 97,740 trips to passengers throughout St. Lawrence County last year. St. Lawrence County Legislative Chair David Forsythe shared comments at the event, as well.
